Projectors And Generators Ask: How Do I Find The Right Career?

If you are a Projector, Generator, or Manifesting Generator, you know the torture of going to a job you hate. One that burns you out and makes you unhappy. You wake up frustrated every Monday, still stuck in the same place. You've tried everything to find the right career but nothing works out as planned. Sound familiar?

When you are new to Human Design, you learn that it can help you find the right career and job. You feel relieved, excited, and desperate all at the same time. Projectors desperately want to know how to find a career that will not exhaust and stress them out. Generators and Manifesting Generators want to know which job will give them satisfaction and room to grow.

By the time I learned I was a Projector, I was recovering from yet another burnout episode. One day I was at the peak of my hospital nursing career, and the next I couldn’t get out of bed I was so tired. Thankfully, I learned that I was not built to work a traditional hospital nursing schedule. Woo hoo! That's all I needed to hear. I was out of there.

I was desperate to have my type and strategy work for me. I wanted to wake up one morning and just be a Projector. But that’s not how it works. – Learning and using your Human Design instructions is not a rush job. It takes time, and like a baby learning to walk, things are a bit wobbly in the beginning. You will need help and support.

If you are wondering how to use your design to choose the right job or career, keep reading.

First, you will want to take an inventory of where you are right now.

  1. How urgent is your need for a new job?

  2. Can you hang onto your current job a little longer?

  3. Is your physical and mental health optimum?

  4. Are you getting help from expert sources?

  5. Do you know your purpose or life’s theme?

  6. Are you having the desired success using your type and strategy to achieve your purpose?

Next, you will need a mentor. Someone who's been there done that. -- I am a 3/5 Projector, Cross of the Four Ways. This means, 1) I learn by ‘trial and error,’ and 2) my purpose and gifts are directing others to reach their maximum potential. -- In short, I am here to mentor others. I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t, so you don’t have to.

Here is how you prepare to find the right career for your Human Design type:

1. Listen to your intuition, trust your body, get healthy

When you’re coming from a place of worry and exhaustion, the exact career opportunity you want is not coming for you. Your energy is not aligned with what you are asking for. You are not ready for it.

You need to build an all-around healthy foundation while you learn about your Human Design. By the time you are at your best, you will be ready to attract what you want. By then, you will know how to use your strategy to attract Projector and Generator-friendly work.

2. Don’t give up your day job

If at all possible, keep your current job. Don’t complicate things. Nothing is more stressful than looking for a job when you don’t have one. Instead, think about possible change-options at your current job. Can you work fewer days? Can you work a lighter shift? Can you job share? Can you work from home?

  • Visualize where you are going.

Knowing your type and energy level gives your imagination a framework. Visualize, journal, paint, or draw the ideal job, schedule and structure for your type. Become conscious about the job, career, or business you want. – This might just reveal that you start right where you are and tweak your current job.

3. Ask for help

Are you afraid to ask for help? If you are finding it hard to get out of bed, focus, or function, please call your doctor. If you are on your feet, but at your wit’s end, think about who can help you and call them.

Worrying about being judged or disappointing someone will keep you stuck. Chances are everybody already knows you are not doing well. The poor quality of your work, mood, and health tell the story.

  • Who should you ask for help?

  1. Make a list of what needs to be done to improve your situation.

  2. Choose a highlighter and highlight what you think you can do on your own.

  3. Choose another highlighter color, and highlight what you need help with.

  4. Look at the list of things you need help with and write a name, service, or professional that can help you.

Don’t waste your energy asking people who cannot help you to help you!

  • Do you need time off work? Do you need a different schedule? — Talk to your boss or go to Human Resource

  • Is anxiety, depression, panic, or other mood issue slowing you down? — Call your Medical Doctor, hire a counselor, and read my blog “How to Find a Therapist.

  • Are you having trouble figuring out who to ask for help?— Find that trusted friend or relative and tell them you need their help you think. Avoid talking to coworkers or your local coffee shop barista. They may not be the safest or most caring choices. -- Talk to experts and people who can actually help you.

4. Human Design and burnout

Have you ever pulled yourself back from the edge of burnout only to find yourself on track to another episode? You’re frustrated, bitter, and exhausted again. — This means you don’t know how your type operates and it’s time to get intimately familiar with your design.

Your design instructions (strategy) can start working for you right away, but to use it with finesse and accuracy you need practice and feedback. Strategies like waiting to respond and waiting for invitations have special learning curves.

In my Human Design journey, I found myself back on the burnout wagon because I didn’t fully understand my type and strategy. Sure, I chose jobs that allowed me to rest more, but I forgot about the invitation part of my strategy.

Handling the ‘need to rest’ part of my Projector type first made sense because I was suffering from burnout. But, if I had understood how to wait for an invitation, I would not have ended up in jobs that stressed me out in other ways. – It took me a long time to realize it wasn’t the job that was doing me in, it was how I got into the job. I was initiating and not waiting for an invitation.

5. Generators and Projectors can do anything

Generators and Projectors can do any job or career they want to as long as they know how to work the system. That is, work the system of their type and strategy. Do you know your type and strategy backward and forward? In the immortal words of Missy Elliott, can you “flip it and reverse it?”

Finding the right career for your Generator or Projector type depends on how well you understand the nuances of your strategy and how closely you align with your type. There is no way around it.

Also, it took decades to learn how not to be a Generator or Projector and you had help to do that. Would you expect unlearning and re-learning how to be a Generator or Projector to happen overnight?

The Big Picture

Restore your health, keep your day job, get expert help, learn your design, and prepare to receive the right work or career for you.

If your mindset is not right and your body is breaking down, the Universe will not bring you what you want. That would be Universal malpractice. You would not be ready, and it would be unkind and unfair.

Keep in mind that everyone’s situation is different, and your strategy needs to be seen in the light of your unique issues and energy level.
